My Marsden March – and Why I’m walking

Thursday 19th Mar
Cancer is something most of us will encounter at some point in our lives, through a friend, a family member, or someone we love. In July 2024, it became my reality.
What started as a routine mammogram quickly turned into something far more frightening. I was called back for further tests and then told the words no one expects to hear. I had three lumps. All of them were cancer. In that moment, everything stopped.
There is never a “right” Time to receive a diagnosis like this, but mine came just two months before my daughter‘s wedding. A time that should have been filled with excitement, joy, and celebration was suddenly shattered by fear and uncertainty, I was told treatment needed to begin within three months.
After emotional conversations and sleepless nights, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life. I chose to carry on with the wedding plans and not tell my daughter or son-in-law until after their special day. I wanted their wedding to be filled only with happiness, not worry. With the support of my medical team, I was placed on medication to safely delay treatment until after the wedding. Holding that secret was incredibly difficult, but seeing my daughter happy made it worth it.
This year, I’m taking part in the Banham Marsden March, Walking 15 miles from the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea to the Royal Marsden in Sutton. These are not just two points on a map, they are the places where I was cared for, supported, and treated with extraordinary kindness during one of the most challenging periods of my life.
The Royal Marsden didn’t just treat my cancer, they treated me. With compassion, expertise, and unwavering support, they gave me strength when I felt at my weakest. I will forever be grateful to every doctor, nurse and member of staff who helped me through my journey.
By taking on this walk, I hope to give something back. Every donation will help the Royal Marsden continue their life-saving work, support, patients and families facing cancer today, and vital research that gives hope for tomorrow.
Every penny truly does count. Thank you for reading my story, for your kindness, and for any support you are able to give. It means more than I can say.
