Why I am Marching with Marsden

For those of you close to me, you may know that my auntie (my mum's sister) passed away in 2023 at the age of 51. Since her death, my mum decided to get a private full body health scan whilst on her holiday in China. They suspected that she had lung cancer.

Upon returning to the UK, over the course of six months with the NHS, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and lymphoma. She was successfully operated on back in Oct 24 where half of her left lung was removed.

She has since recovered but is receiving ongoing care and monitoring from the Royal Marsden. The doctors at Royal Marsden also provided advice, however brief, to my auntie during her short battle with cancer.

When my mum received a flyer for the Marsden March, she couldn't help herself but to sign up and give back. I couldn't let her do this by herself so here I am asking you for your generous donations!

My updates

At the Finish Line

Monday 11th May

Yesterday, I completed the 15 mile walk, alongside my mum and my wife, from The Royal Marsden in Chelsea to The Royal Marsden in Sutton.

It was an eye opening experience and I have learnt a lot about myself and my mum. Here are some of the things that I learnt through yesterday’s journey:

  • My expectation was that we would walk at the slowest pace of our group, my mum.
  • The reality was that we walked at the fastest pace of the group, which turned out to be my mum.
  • My mum is an Olympic power walker in disguise.
  • I drink lots of water when I walk and I think my mum doesn’t drink enough water when she walks.
  • My mum thinks I have a weak bladder.
  • Having half a lung less than everyone else doesn’t stop my mum.
  • My muscles are tight and sore this morning. My mum had no complaints. Conclusion: muscles must age like fine wine.
  • As one anonymous donor has said, “You might carry the water bottle Pete but I suspect your mum has been carrying you for many many years”.

Both me and my mum are overwhelmed by all the support you have given us and would like to thank each of you who were generous enough to make a donation. I could tell that my mum was driven by all the donations she’s had and was asking about who each of you who donated directly to her.

For those who haven’t yet made a donation, I hope our story has changed your mind! It’s not too late. Donate to Pete or Pete's mum.

Thanks again everyone!
