Duncan & Bruce’s story

Monday 27th Apr
My younger brother Bruce was treated for acute myeloid leukaemia at the Royal Marsden Sutton. He was admitted in 1983 just before his A level exams. He took them while in the isolation room on the children’s ward and was accepted for university. Bruce was so positive and upbeat that the nurses liked him to sit and talk with new patients. The hospital and staff were fantastic to us all throughout.

Chemo  gave Bruce time but without a full tissue match a matched-transplant wasn’t possible. He was unable to complete his first year at Uni and he died in April 1985 aged 20. He died on my 23rd Birthday.

This walk between the Marsden Chelsea and the Marsden Sutton with Maria links my past and my present, and is a walk of gratitude and hope, for the future of cancer treatment.

Maria’s story

Monday 27th Apr
‘We are walking together in gratitude for everything the Royal Marsden has done for me, Duncan’s brother Bruce, Kevin and for other friends and relatives.
I was diagnosed with stage 3 Malignant Melanoma in 2013 and after my first recurrence in 2016, was referred to the Royal Marsden for an Immunotherapy trial. I went onto to develop Stage 4 Metastatic melanoma in 2021 and received immunotherapy which led to a  remission of the disease by February 2022.  Now I’m 4 years in complete remission. I remember the first day I walked into the hospital filled with trepidation, but at every point was treated with kindness,  care and dignity.
I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL’
