The crucial reasons I am attempting to walk The Banham Marsden March 2025
Friday 21st Feb
I am excited to participate in the Banham Marsden March 2025 which will entail walking 15 miles from Chelsea to Sutton in London in order to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. I have been participating in charity walks since the age of 9 when I was in high school, so I am excited in volunteering to participate in the Banham Marsden March 2025 which I will be doing in honour of my late maternal grandfather, Pa Tiamiyu Oderinde.
Though my grandfather didn't die of cancer, his legacy of kindness and community has inspired me to raise funds for a cause that impacts millions worldwide. I am launching this fundraising campaign in his honour, with the hope of supporting those battling cancer and contributing to the search for a cure. My grandfather was a beacon of love, wisdom and strength. He singlehandedly raised and parented my mum and her siblings, was tenacious and resilient in the days when it was very tough for him. His generosity and compassion touched the life of many.
Even though he didn't suffer from cancer, I have witnessed the struggles of others having this disease. This has deeply impacted me because I now know that there is a thin line between ill health and good health. In his memory, I am motivated to make a difference and offer support to those fighting cancer.
Cancer is a formidable opponent that doesn't discriminate. I have witnessed teenagers diagnosed of cancer and had to undergo surgeries to treat and ameliorate the disease. Working in one of the largest cancer centres in Europe, everyday, I witness at least 4 cancer surgeries in the theatres, where over 30 cancer surgeries take place everyday, even on weekends. I understand the struggles these cancer patients go through.
The funds raised through this campaign will go directly to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, an organisation dedicated to cancer research, patient support and advocacy. One of the numerous contributions and support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity towards cancer research is the groundbreaking clinical trials which were carried out in 2024, at the hospital supported by the funding from Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The first Tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy for the treatment of advanced melanoma received accelerated approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The treatment called Lifileucel, could help extend patients' lives, provide an alternative option for patients whose cancer has not responded to other treatments, and potentially transform how other cancer types are treated in the future. The FDA's approval will hopefully facilitate the treatment to be approved all over the world.
Your contributions will help to fund innovative cancer research, provide essential care and support services, and raise awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. Your support can make a significant difference. Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful impact. Please spread the word about this fundraising by sharing my fundraising link with your friends and family on social media.
Let us unite in the fight against cancer. Your generosity and compassion can bring hope and healing to those in need. Together, we can make a difference in a profound and meaningful way to honour the memory of my grandfather.
Thank you for your support. Pa Tiamiyu Oderinde lives on!
