I am taking a walk…
I’m going on a good old sponsored walk, with much joy and thanks in my heart, between the two extraordinary Marsden hospitals that looked after me when I had anal cancer. The amazing thing is that they are still looking after me now, steering me forward through the twists and turns of recovery and check ups.
As you walk up the steps into Chelsea, or turn into Sutton you can feel your heart start to pound, the panic rising and sometimes it completely overwhelms. I remember those feelings most clearly from the lonely days of treatment, tests and results during Covid when I couldn’t go in with anyone to hold my hand. But - the moment I was through the door, I felt enveloped in care, expertise, reassurance, support and, luckily for me, the availability of life-saving treatments.
As I approach my final scan in September, it’s time to say an emotional farewell (fingers crossed) and thanks to these wonderful hospitals by undertaking this walk.
