Catriona Takes On The Royal Marsden March, Sunday 11th May 2025!
Back in late 2010, mum was poorly and clearly had been for some time but we had no idea what was wrong and certainly had no idea the extent of how poorly she really was! Fast forward to the new year and as she lay in a hospital bed, the consultant informed her it was bad news...she had incurable cancer and was only expected to live for around two more weeks! Shock would be an understatement! How could a seemingly healthy woman in her mid-sixties and still in full time work (ironically as a carer) be about to die? Having survived cancer myself back in 2000, I was not satisfied with this prognosis so set about getting a second opinion. The Royal Marsden were amazing and agreed that if Mutti could walk into the appointment herself, they would treat her! She was given first class treatment from the get go, her stomach tumour was shrinking and we all had a bit of breathing space to get our heads around what was happening and for Mutti to get her affairs in order. Sadly, she was so weakened by the treatment, her intestine became perforated and she died in organ failure 5 months later. But that 5 months left us with no regrets and we are all eternally grateful to the Royal Marsden for giving us all that extra time together! Ever since then, most of my fundraising efforts have been for the Royal Marsden. So to be able to participate in their very own Marsden March once again (I did one a long time back) and to be able to give back in a small but important way, really means a lot! After running the London Marathon for the past 3 consecutive years and also taking part in several full marathon Macmillan Mighty Hikes per year in that time too, this 12 mile walk between the London and Sutton hospitals should be a breeze! So now the focus lies in reaching my fundraising target of £150! If you are inspired by my story and think you might be able to spare a little something to help me reach my target, I would really appreciate it! Huge thanks in advance to everyone who is able to contribute in any way, however great or small! :)
