Together we walk! Message from Yvonne and Lucia

We are doing The Marsden March for The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton and Chelsea. We chose this because one of Yvonne's friends and Lucia's father, Alfonso Assorgi, was cared for at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton. This will be Yvonne third time of doing the Marsden March and Lucia's second.

Yvonne trained to be a teacher with Helen, Alfonso's wife and Lucia is the youngest of Alfonso and Helen's two beautiful daughters, Maddalena and Lucia. In August 2021, some masses were discovered on Alfonso's brain, and after two biopsies, it was said to be T-cell Lymphoma of the Central Nervous System, which is very rare. Alfonso went on to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Royal Marsden, but, unfortunately, despite the fight Alfonso put up, he passed away in October 2022.

Alfonso was born in Italy, he had a huge personality and great sense of humour. It is safe to say that it was a definite case of once met, never forgotten with Alfonso. You always knew he was around. He was kind, considerate, he would do anything for anyone and was full of love for his family. He would do anything for Helen and his girls. When he was told how rare his tumours were, he was happy to help with further research in anyway if it could help someone in the future. At his funeral, there was a collection to sponsor a day in his name in order to support the Royal Marsden in researching treatments and care for their patients and this has been continued since then. He could not have had better care than he did at the Royal Marsden in Sutton, which was extended to Helen and the girls. The staff were so caring and made Alfonso feel safe, right up until he lost his fight. Money raised goes to funding work which is revolutionising cancer treatment, helping to pioneer new ways to save or improve the lives of patients with cancer, both at The Royal Marsden and across the world.
